So how do you work with your talent and stack it with skills? Here are two ways I do it.
First, I focus on my high talent areas because they deliver high ROI quicker in more tangible ways. Plus they’re more fun and exciting, which creates good energy for me.
I identify specific skills I don’t do well that would enhance or leverage my existing talent. If I’m naturally talented at public speaking, which I am, I might stack it with skills of humor/comedic timing, empathy in large groups, or handling difficult questions. All these these unlock more of my talent to let it grow and shine.
Second, I focus on my low talent areas that could undermine me if I lack self-awareness either because I ignore them or because I waste time and energy trying to become good at something I don’t need.
I identify specific skills I need in order to meet the basics for survival and security. If I’m naturally untalented at details, which I am, I might stack it with skills of asking great questions, trust and delegation with people who are good at detail, or being so good at other things that details aren’t as important. All these safeguard me against my low talent costing me too much but don’t require me to build talent where I don’t have it.
Embrace the chase. Do the work.
