When I was 10 years old I hated school work. I couldn’t even pretend to work hard on it. The best days were basic assignments that came easy. The worst days were advanced assignments I had to work to figure out. It wasn’t that I couldn’t. I didn’t want to, so I wouldn’t. This pattern continued for me through college.
The image of work isn’t hard to project but doing the work isn’t something you can fake. You can avoid work, delay work, pretend to work, and wish for work to magically get done without you. I tried them all.
Work eventually has to be done. Delay and avoidance only results in less time to do it with higher stress and lower skill.
After college, around 25 years old, I made a decision: I chose to fall in love with the work. Not just the fun parts. Not just the rewarding parts. I decided to fall in love with all of it.
I still make that choice every day.
Embrace the chase. Do the work.
